23.9 seconds to beat

CHARITY EVENT TO SET THE STANDARD

At the annual Cancer Research fund raising evening that was held on 13/10/07,the 120 guests that attended could have mistaken the evening to be a greek wedding, what with all the smashing that was going on. Sensei Richard and Senpai Phill (the clubs Instructors) put on a display that could only have been described as phenominal. With the help of 3 senior students Tony Jones 10th Kyu, James Ruiz 9th Kyu and Peter Hilldrup 9th Kyu the demonstration was set up. Concrete blocks were set up with 10 roof tiles on each and 100 tiles were prepared. Allun Jones (speaker for the evening) announced them to the floor. Senpai Phill was first up setting not only a personal record but setting a standard for the club, smashing the first 20 with right hand with ease and on the following 10 couldn't quite get the whole 10, Moving on to the 4th set of 10 Senpai Phill changed to left hand and proceeded to break through a further 30 tiles. At this point Senpai phill changed to elbow strike and continued along the remaining 30 tiles. As there was the one remaining tile from stack 3, that was placed on the last stack which was completed.

Senpai Phill smashing tiles for Cancer Research

After a quick clean up it was Sensei Richard's turn. Sensei Richard attempted 100 tiles in under 1 minute. 100 tiles were stacked again and after a few minutes of checking and double checking the tiles Sensei Richard was up and ready to go. The hall was silent with anticipation of what was about to happen. Sensei Richard stepped up to the first stack and Senpai Phill counted him in. As soon as Senpai Phill Shounted San ( the number 3 in japanese ) Sensei Richard was off smashing through the first stack with no problems at all, using right fist and then straight off to the next, smashing through them with ease using right knife hand, quickly over to the next using right elbow, moving on using left fist then left knife hand then left elbow, stepping backwards then to left foot stomping through a stack then right foot, then driving his head through a stack. At first attempt not all tiles broke, but back into it again with his head he went demolishing the stack. Jumping into the middle with 2 stacks remaining Sensei Richard using both hands simultaniously smashed through both stacks with no problems at all. Even though Sensei Richard's demonstration was absolutly amazing it wasn't nearly as amazing as the time it took him, an AMAZING 23.9 seconds.(Time keeper Geoff Brown Chairman for Cancer Research UK) Sensei Richard has offered any club in our area to attempt to beat this time.(Details will follow shortly).

Sensei Richard attempting his record

After the event was over, I spoke with Sensei Richard and Senpai Phill. Sensei Richard said ; "We are always happy to help any charity, but with this particular event it has been a huge success, this is something that has never been done before and with our clubs 30th birthday approching it really has made our club stand out".

When I asked Sensei Richard how he managed to complete this amazing task he said; "I went into it like I would if I was going into a Full Contact Tournament, it wasn't going to beat me".

Senpai Phill commented on his performance tonight ; "Im amazed at how much was raised. We have had support on this event from many people including Cross Street Motors, Allsta Motors and Camilleri Roofing. What I did tonight was a big achievement for me, I had only ever smashed 10 before now. It's great for our club.

The club raised £500 at this point, but not all sponsorship money is in yet. They estimate this figure to increase in excess of £800. Well done to everyone involved.
