What our current students think.

Still not sure if you want to join ?

If anyone has any doubts about joining our club, Some of our students have been asked if they would post a message on our site to show what they think of our club and organisation. Maybe they can help you take your first step towards a better you.

All these comments are completley unedited.

Senpai Phill Sedgmond (Assistant to the Chief Instructor) : Although I’m probably a bit bias to this as I am very passionate about our club, I would still like to mention that not only how proud I am about my achievements but I’m exceptionally proud of the students I have helped to make their achievements possible. Our club has got some very dedicated students and I can see a very exciting future ahead for Barry Kyokushin Karate Club, I’m very proud to be a part of it.

Peter Hilldrup (Student 8th Kyu): I joined Barry Kyokushin Karate club as it is something i always wanted to do and my son Jack started with the club the year before. I have noticed a great difference in my sons confidence as a result of Kyokushin Karate. As a 44 year old i thought i was perhaps too old and unfit to do karate but how wrong i was! Fitness is not important initially as the training will get you fit as you progress. I really enjoy the training and have met some great new friends. The club has a great atmosphere and we always have a laugh. Our instructors Sensei Richard and Senpai Phill are both well respected and excellent instructors with many years experience between them in teaching Karate. Training can be hard sometimes but i come away from every session with a sense of achievement and confidence. We have all had some great times socially doing charity events and meeting up for a pint (we aren't total fitness freaks)!. If like me you have thought about doing some form of Karate then just go for it. Some of us are off to summer camp in July which is a training weekend giving us the chance to meet people from all over the UK and train with the best instructors in the country. My aim now is to complete all my gradings and go for my blackbelt and may be eventually an instructor, such is the enjoyment i get from belonging to a great club.

James Ruiz 8th KYU:- I joined Barry Kyokushin Karate Club in the beginners classes of march 2007. I first met Senpai Phill some time ago now through my work and it was him who encouraged me to come along and have a go, I was a little apprehensive as excercise is not really my thing. Never the less I went along and haven't looked back. I found two very helpful instructors and made lots of new friends within the club. Kyokushin karate has made me a more confident person and my advice to anyone who fancies having a go is to come down to one of our beginners course.

I joined Barry Kyokushin Karate Club because I thought it would be fun and it is a lot of fun.
I have worked very hard for my belts and now I'm nearly half way to black belt. Since I came to Barry Kyokushin Karate Club I have met loads of new friends, sometimes we all get together and have sleepover, laughs ect. I really want to carry on and achieve my black belt,I don't know how far I'm going to go with them but I will try my hardest. I really enjoy the training, I like all of my instructors(Sensei Richard and Senpai Phill "My dad").
Learning Kyokushin has been very interesting for me, it's not like any other karate I have known, you dont just learn karate, you learn about the history (not usually my favourite subject) of kyokushin karate too.You get to meet other students and Instructors from other clubs too. I have been to a tournament and fought,it was great fun, all my friends came along and my family. I have learnt so much doing Kyokushin and love learning new kata's and tecniquies. So if your thinking of joining any type of martial arts then look no further. This place is the best.

Gareth Dutton (10th Kyu).

I joined Barry Kyokushin karate Club in the March 2008 beginners course, I've always wanted to learn a martial art and through friends and family i was introduced to kyokushin karate with Sensei Richard and Senpai Phill. I was a bit apprehensive at first but after a couple of lessons i found my feet and haven't looked back. Karate has has also boosted my fitness and confidence and this has followed me in my day to day life ie, work, relationships and family Kyokushin Karate is an amazing sport and anyone who is thinking of joining is making the right choice. Becky Scott (10th Kyu)

Joining the Barry Kyokushin Karate Club was probably one of the best things i could have done. I joined wanting to learn self defence and to gain confidence as i use to be a very timid person. Friends, some of who are also students, recommended I join and thanks to the great training and encouragement the clubs Instructors and fellow students , i believe i have gained a lot from my time there. I have progressed and achieved a great deal in both dojo and in life since joining the club and its definitely been an amazing experience thus far, so I would recommend Barry Kyokushin Karate Club to all you aspiring Jackie Chan's out there !
